St. Colmans, Mayo Abbey
Expands its Organic Training Service
The new organic garden centre at Mayo Abbey is generating
great interest this autumn. The centre developed this year
by Mayo Abbey Community Council is based close to the Bishop
O'Healy resource centre on a one-acre plot of land belonging
to the church. It comprises of raised beds, two
poly-tunnels, a potting shed and tool shed.
The community council chairman said "We see huge
potential around this project but it will take time to
develop to its full potential. Even in this its first year,
the benefits can be seen. The resource centre kitchen is now
supplied daily with vegetables from our organic garden. An
averaging of 120 meals per week are prepared including daily
lunch for children attending the crèche and
after-school and every Friday dinner is provided for the
senior citizens and staff".
Looking around the garden and tunnels the variety of
vegetables grown is amazing.
Sale of vegetables now commenced with a box system used
where people can phone in their order to the centre.
